When we think of volcanic islands, we tend to think of hot tropical islands full of flowers and trees. Deception Island, on the other hand, is different. Deception Island is an active volcano located in the coldest regions of the world: Antarctica. The island has both fire and ice in the form of hot volcanic eruptions, freezing glaciers and steamy hot springs. Long ago, the central cone of this volcano collapsed. The collapse created a caldera, or a crater-like structure, that has filled up with water. Yet one should not be deceived, for a volcano is still there. Deception Island has erupted more than once in the past 100 years. Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of Deception Island is that the water-filled caldera allows sailors to sail right into the middle of its volcano.
